Dredge Worker gets $550,000 After Falling Down Stairs

falling down stairs caused client's injuriesWe obtained a successful settlement for a 62-year-old dredge worker who was injured falling down stairs. He sustained injuries to his knee, shoulder and lower back.
You might think that falling down stairs at work is something that “just happens”, that there isn’t necessarily a reason for that kind of accident. We disgree. Vessels are required to follow certain industry standards when they’re constructed and even stair design is strictly controlled in order to create as safe a workplace as possible.
According to OSHA regulations, 29 CFR 1910.24(f) states that all treads shall be reasonably slip-resistant and the nosings shall be of nonslip finish. In our client’s case, the stairs were not equipped with proper non-skid tread on the first step and because of this oversight, water and oil had collected there. As a result, our client slipped on the unsafe stairway and was injured.
He had to get an arthroscopy and partial meniscectomies on his left knee as well as physical therapy for increasing his range of motion and strength training. He had difficulty standing for long periods of time and difficulty walking as well as trouble raising his arm above his head. Fortunately, we were able to get him the treatment he needed to recover as much as possible as well as a settlement that he was very happy with.
